RoadRunner Advisory
Update: 22 June, 2006, RoadRunner Making an Effort
We have received information directly from RoadRunner that will permit us to remove some generic biz.rr.com ranges from the dynamic list. RR Business Class customers are strongly encouraged to request unique reverse pointers to replace the generic biz.rr.com host names that they have by default. Upon request, we are immediately removing, from the dynamic list, any biz.rr.com IP that resolves to a unique reverse pointer. Response time is now averaging less than 90 minutes.
Update: 6 June, 2006
RoadRunner continues to sell DYNAMIC business service.
We have contacted RoadRunner through their abuse desk, through Time Warner and through Time Warner Cable. Not only have they not disclosed their dynamic biz.rr.com ranges but they simply will not respond to a polite request. We have no desire, whatsoever, to continue to list all of biz.rr.com as dynamic and have so informed the provider. Under the circumstances and given the amount of exploited machines in those ranges, we have no choice whatsoever.
Locally, we are now blocking all of res.rr.com as well as biz.rr.com. Hits are added to the distributed blocklists as /24 ranges. Overall, this is due to an alarming number of exploited machines or "zombies."
While the res.rr.com filter is obvious (it's comprised of dynamic ranges), the reasons for including biz.rr.com are explained below:
- Roadrunner's abuse desk has been extremely non-responsive.
- rDNS is generic. Given the lack of accountability combined with a non-responsive abuse desk, the problems — often exploits — are never resolved.
- Some biz.rr.com IP addresses are dynamic.
- We have received spam from almost 1,200 unique biz.rr.com clients.
