New Frog: Okopipi

Those Amphibian Lovers are at it — Again

People are desperate to reduce spam. With Blue Frog barely in the ground, members of the former community are formulating the launch of Okopipi which is being developed as an open source P2P successor.

My problems with Blue Frog were primarily based on the notion that fighting abuse with abuse is a very bad idea. I also found that Blue Security was disingenuous. An analysis of some of the numbers asked more question than it answered.

The problem with Okopipi is that it lacks proof of concept. Nobody really knows if Blue Frog was effective. There is a general acceptance that it must have been effective to have engendered a DDoS attack. That ”logic” is spectacularly flawed. Given some of the obvious security issues, the fear is that there is far greater potential for Okopipi to do more harm than good. Meanwhile, the project seems to lack cohesiveness and ”constancy of purpose” but that's not uncommon in community driven open source projects. It remains to be seen if and when they will get the project off the ground.
