Information for Legitimate Bulk Emailers
Bulk mailers who do not use confirmed opt-in do so at their own risk. There is no way to determine that an alleged false positive is not spam unless the confirmed opt-in method is utilized. Please note that our policy is to quarantine spam originators for 30 days from the last spam received.
All of our contributing domains send a 554 reject when email is sent to a user not in the recipient table. Inexplicably, some mailers insist that a 554 is a “transient error“. The source of this mythology is unknown. All 5xx SMTP codes depict permanent failures.
That said, we consider multiple rejects to be spam. Mailers are expected to properly maintain their lists. This includes immediately deleting any hard rejects from their lists. Failing to do so suggests that the entire opt-out procedure of the mailer is flawed. Again, this is subject to a 30 day quarantine.
