Bell South Advisory

Attention: Bell South Customers

17 December:

Our volunteers have begun removing Bell South IPs as the spam has been tapering off and to limit collateral damage. However, given the history of negligence, there is a high potential for these to be re-listed. Moreover, these continue to be listed by SORBS.net which is a well respected and heavily used block list.

We apologize for any inconvenience that you might be encountering due to email being rejected.

Two of the larger DNSBLs are currently listing IP addresses associated with Bell South; TQMcube and SORBS.net. We would like nothing more than to remove these listings as they create a large volume of removal requests that we are obligated to answer.

These servers are listed because they are generating a significant amount of spam. Either Bell South is not handling abuse reports, there is an authentication issue or relay authentication has been compromised.

We have referred hundreds of customers back to Bell South and we have contacted them several times. We have received no response, whatsoever, from Bell. We are accustomed to working with large ISPs to resolve these issues. It makes perfect sense for the ISP to at least contact us to find out why they are listed and, possibly, get a handle on the problem.

We don't know if BS are blissfully ignorant, negligent or inconsiderate. There is a continuing and large stream of spam originating form their servers. This problem is only going to get worse as more DNSBLs include these IPs.

Bell South advises customers:

Solution:
Attempt to resend, or contact the recipient by alternate means to let
them know about the issue.

Intentional or not, the above seems to shift responsibility to the recipient. The "solution" is to do something about the spam!

We encourage Bell South customers to contact Customer Service. This issue is not going to disappear. It will only be addressed with some customer advocacy.
